| Movie Review: American Dreamz Alternate Title: American Dud
Story: There's a special place
for movies like this one. The place most prominent in my thoughts is
that it will be the first film of 2006 to get onto my WORST films of
the year list - a dubious distinction, no doubt. Writer and director Paul Weitz
should not be putting this on his resume. It is bad in so many ways.
It fails as a satire since American Idol is already its own satire.
It fails as a political statement about a President of the US who doesn't
read the newspapers (how old is that story line)? It fails as a comedy
because it is simply not funny. It fails on many other smaller levels
like including Chris Klein as one of the stars. So are there any redeeming
qualities to this film? The short answer is NO. Save
your money and your time since this film will be on cable or in airplanes
within weeks. Acting: The only good thing I can say is that I prefer
the newest version of Hugh Grant as the rich, handsome
man who is angry and depressed. I hated the older version of Hugh Grant
with his pfumpherings and blinking. Mandy Moore was
unremarkable. Dennis Quaid as the President looked
uncomfortable. Willem Defoe was weird (isn't he always)?
Everyone else was forgettable just like this film.
Predilection: I admit that I watch (and enjoy) American
Idol.
Critters: None
Food: Mansy Moore's character is a compulsive eater.
Blatant Product Placement: Ferrari, Pepsi and I am
sure there were others but I drifted quite a bit during the film.
Soundtrack: Forgettable
Opening Titles: Cartoonish (a good clue to what was
coming).
Theater Audience: Three other dumbstruck movie-goers.
Squirm Scale: I squirmed at the rottenness of the
film.
Drift Factor: I planned my entire month of May while
watching this piece of crap.
Predictability Level: Who cared?
Tissue Usage: I cried that I wasted money on this
drivel.
Oscar Worthy: HA!
Big Screen or Rental: Neither
Length: Too long at just under two hours.
LOBO HOWLS: 1
