| Movie Review: American Gypsy Story: Cher's Gypsies, Tramps
and Thieves, is one of the songs on the soundtrack in this fascinating
documentary by young Indian director/writer Jasmine Dellal.
Along with the Irish, I have had a long time interest in all things
Gypsy. The seemingly free, mysterious, exotic and outsider quality of
their edgy lives has a certain draw for me. Hollywood has long perpetuated
these myths and helped to continue the terrible discrimination that
these people live with even today. Did you know that 1.5 million gypsies
were sent to the camps during the Holocaust? The story weaves interesting
facts, legend and history with the real life story of the Marks family
from Spokane Washington who spent 11 years in court vs. the City of
Spokane for illegal search and seizure of property, assets and a despoiling
of their selves. I learned a lot, had my consciousness raised and feel
I am generally better for having seen this very interesting film. Our
movie experience was enhanced (my friend Gail accompanied me, as she
does for many of the high quirky factor movies) by arriving early and
finding only two other people in the theater. We started to chat with
them and it turned out they were gypsies! Fifteen minutes later, by
film's start, there were about 20 people in the theater and over half
of them were gypsy (they all knew each other) and the rest were Gadje
(gypsy equivalent of gentile). This made the movie experience
even better and gave me a new idea for a category (see below).
