| Movie Review: American Psycho Story: I confess to having a long time morbid fascination with
serial killers. So while I did not read Bret Easton Ellis'
book, I could not resist seeing the movie. Director and co-writer Mary
Haddon (who did the terrific I Shot Andy Warhol) along
with co-writer Guinevere Turner has created a polished,
fast paced, often very funny horror film. Most of the film's characters
have absolutely no redeeming qualities. They are portrayed as whiny, drugged,
anti-Semitic, misogynistic, smug, heartless, ruthless, mindless, pointless
or merely despicable and very often you wanted to have them whacked. While
I certainly didn't identify worth anyone I still found myself entertained.
However bizarre, without giving much away, our American Psycho
is actually the only character in the film with a social conscience. While
supposedly an 80's period piece it is a film that echoes the lifestyle
of today's' conspicuous consumption and greed to me. The only difference
in the decades seems to be there is a greater availability of a variety
of drugs in today's market. This is not a film for everyone.
Acting: Welsh actor Christian Bale (who
can forget him in 87's Empire of the Sun)? all grown up and deliciously
psychotic. He is in every scene and I found him to be riveting. Quite
a performance. Reese Witherspoon is terrific as his fiancee
and everyone else is loathsomely indistinguishable from one anther which
I guess was one of the points. Chloe Sevigny was annoying.
Pets: One dog and one cat whose fate the Humane Society
claims was a simulation in the closing credits.
