Movie Review: Croupier

Story: On the surface this is a small story about a would-be novelist who takes a job as a dealer in a London casino because he needs the money. But as in most games of chance - everything is not as it seems. With a fabulous screenplay by Paul Mayersberg and tightly directed by Mike Hodges (Get Carter, The Terminal Man, Black Rainbow) we are immediately absorbed into the after hours casino life, it's inhabitants, rules, ethics, compulsions and atmosphere as seen from our croupier/novelists' eyes. As you well know, I am often critical of the voice-over as a film technique, however, I am breaking my own rule because this time it works brilliantly. There are some surprises awaiting you at film's end (I love being surprised) and if you can find this movie playing anywhere, I highly recommend that you go to see it.

Acting: Clive Owen (you will recognize him from many of the PBS mystery movies) is riveting, intelligent and terrific as our croupier. Alex Kingston (Dr. Elizabeth Corday on Tv's ER) is a wonderfully voluptuous talented actress and should not be limiting herself to the small screen. The entire supporting cast of characters is brilliant and adds to the depth of this first rate entertainment piece.

Visual Art: Very little art in a casino - lots of mirrors.

Soundtrack: Don't remember but I think it was fine and appropriate.

Theater Audience: Five other people who looked like they missed the bus to Atlantic City.

Quirky Meter: 5

Oscar Worthy: I liked Clive Owen a lot and the screen play was terrific.

Length: A perfect 90 minutes
