Movie Review: Frequency Story: Once again I am bound by the reviewer's honor code
to reveal my personal bias's before this review begins.
1. I am crazy about firemen. In last years' NYC Marathon our overall
time was effected by all of the photos I stopped to take with the many
NYC firefighters who came out to support us Marathoners.
2. I love Elvis - been to Graceland twice.
3. I am a sci-fi, black hole, worm hole, time/space anomaly freak.
And so I was hooked by this film's premise within the first 10 minutes
by the dramatic opening big fire/hero scene, an Elvis recording (on
a 45 rpm no less) along with a bit of an impersonation of the King,
and the topper was the aurora borealis light show over the triboro bridge
that allows a father, long dead to communicate with his now grown son
30 years in the future via a ham radio. The first 45 minutes of the
film were terrific. The movie starts to fall apart when they throw in
an old serial killer (although that is another favorite topic of mine),
too much sappiness and plot twists. For those who love the '69 Amazin'
Mets, can bare giant leaps of faith in the plot (and have a semblance
of understand of time/space stuff a la Steven Hawking) this film directed
by Gregory Hoblit (Primal Fear) with a story
by Toby Emmerich will have a fun ride. And for anyone
out there who has always had a yearning to have just one more chance
to speak to a dearly departed family member or friend you will probably
shed a tear or two. Or you can wait and probably see it on video by
the end of the summer.
Acting: Dennis Quaid (my two favorite films of his
are The Big Easy and Great Balls of Fire) makes a
wonderful Dad, fireman, hero and should be in more films. Jim
Caviezel (The Thin Red Line) as the son, is so handsome
I wasn't paying much attention to anything else about him.
Pets: One sweet Dalmatian named Elvis (need I say more)?
Visual Art: None
Soundtrack: Loud and sometimes funny
Theater Audience: Two groups of 20 something young
men who took up more seats than necessary because they all had to sit
one seat apart from each other, 5 middle aged men ( who were alone),
2 women of a certain age (who sat next to each other) and me and my
friend Cococarrol (we sat next to each other, too). By the way, Carol
did not like the film. The aurora borealis over the triboro bridge was
just too much for her.
