Movie Review: We are Together

Alternate Title: Music of the Heart

Story: I expected this film to break my heart (and it did). I also expected to use a tissue or two (and I did). What I did not expect was a film that covered so much ground in a story line that is so well known.

Director Paul Taylor spent a year volunteering at Agape, a home for orphans in South Africa. When he returned to England he decided to make a documentary about the children, their singing and the lives they live. Written by Taylor (with a credit also going to one of the children, Slindile Moya) we watch three years in the lives of these kids, most of whose parents died of AIDS. We watch the story of their lives as Taylor focus' on one family, the Moyas. The Moya family includes nine children, ages 3 to 22. They were orphaned when their parents died. How they hold themselves together against incredible odds is uplifting and is the stuff of family values that is so often simply a bumper sticker is the US.

How the Agape kids practice their singing in order to raise money for their home is joyous, toe tapping and head bobbing. If this film gets to your neighborhood, give yourself a lift and go see it. Yo will feel better about yourself if you do.

Alicia Keys helped raise money for the children of Agape through her foundation http://www.keepachildalive.org/. All monies raised by the sale of their CD goes to the children of Agape.
